The Engineer Troops are among the oldest in the Russian Armed Forces. They were established by a decree of Russian Tsar Peter the Great in 1701, under which an institute was opened in Moscow to train artillery officers and military engineers.

In the modern Russian Army, Engineer Troops have the status of special forces. Their tasks include construction of fortifications, bunkers, bridges and maintenance of traffic routes of troops.

The Engineer Troops play an active role during large-scaled military drills by making pontoon bridges over water obstacles and mapping the traffic of participating troops.

Russian combat engineers took part in recent demining activities in the liberated Syrian cities of Palmyra and Aleppo.
